If I Could Have You Back

“I told him not to go, and I told him it would be dangerous… why won’t he ever listen to me?” Syd cried out loud.
“This is Sky we’re talking about,” Z replied, trying to lighten up the distressed atmosphere. It was impossible, even she didn’t fool herself with her inside guilt. She blamed herself for his sudden disappearance, as it was her that convinced him that it was a good idea for him to be the one to go there after all.
“He’ll be alright,” Bridge reassured her. “As Z just stated, this is Sky. He’s extremely tough, and he’ll overcome anything that is thrown at him out there,” he added.
“But you heard what Crugar just said, we all did,” Syd replied. “And the radio signals from his spacecraft. He sounded in pain, he sounded like he was about to…”
“Don’t say that, Syd!” Z exclaimed. “Don’t you ever say that about Sky. He’ll be back! He will come back to us… to you. I’m telling you that he will come back soon. The academy needs someone who follows all of the rules, and lets face it, that’s definitely not us lot.”
“Z’s right,” Bridge agreed. “Sky set off on that mission, and he will not be satisfied until he returns here, safe and sound, and with the required substance that he set off for.”
“And he is always one to finish what he has already started,” Z knowingly explained.
“What if he is not able to return?” Syd worried.
“He will be!” Z shouted. She was getting really annoyed with Syd’s negative tone of voice, while her and Bridge tried to keep positive until they knew anything about it for sure… which they didn’t at all quite yet.
“And besides, you must remember what he said before he left…” Bridge nervously smiled at her. “He said that he’ll be back before you know it, and the wedding that you have both been dreaming about for the last few months can finally become a reality.”
“And Sky will not be satisfied until he has you down that aisle, and that huge diamond ring on your finger,” Z told her. “He will return, because his love for you will make him determined to see you again… and love can be quite dangerous when faced with what Sky is going through.”
“I think she means that anything that gets in Sky’s way of finally returning home will be made to be very sorry,” Bridge explained to the heartbroken, young, Pink Ranger.
“Exactly,” Z agreed.
“He’ll be back,” Bridge added.
“Of course he will,” Z replied adamantly.
Syd shot the pair of them what was suppose to be a very convincing smile, but it didn’t really come across like it was suppose to have done. She still didn’t believe them both, but they did talk some sense, she supposed to herself.
On the subject of you being gone forever,
I still can't believe it, I can't see it,
I should just stop counting days.
Flashback - Syd’s 19th birthday, 2026.
Syd stood on the spot, completely shocked and speechless… yet very happy at the same time. “Wow,” was the only word that escaped her vocabulary at that moment in time. She stared at the huge diamond ring, and then back up at the Red Ranger, that was currently awaiting his answer curiously and worriedly.
Sky looked at her nervously. He didn’t know why he was nervous, as even he could see the ecstatic sparkle in her clear blue eyes. He didn’t say anything else. And instead he continued to stay on one knee, on the wooden floor of her bedroom. While he held out to her a beautiful velvet red box, with a golden ribbon wrapped around it, and it currently contained the Pink Ranger’s dream engagement ring.
Sky, however, wanted her to wear it on her finger in the near future.
At first Syd was shocked at the sight of him proposing to her on her bedroom floor, just as they were about to go out to dinner and celebrate her birthday that evening. Now she was shocked because however much she wanted to scream and shout ‘YES,’ she was still remaining reluctantly silent.
“Is it a yes… then?” Sky nervously laughed. He suddenly felt like a complete idiot as he was still knelt down on her wooden bedroom floor. The mirror opposite him reflected his cheeks as he blushed slightly, one could say that he resembled his Red Ranger suit.
The Pink Ranger’s eyes suddenly contained her tears, as she smiled to reassure him that she was of course happy. “It’s definitely a yes!” She finally replied, emotionally in the process of doing so. She suddenly helped the Red Ranger to his feet and pulled his lips to hers as she wrapped her arms around him into a huge, and painfully tight, hug. But he didn’t mind, and she certainly didn’t mind.
… This was definitely her best birthday so far.
On the subject of the future,
Wouldn't it be nice to leave it open ended,
And pretend it could go either way.
Syd had been doing it a lot recently, especially because of Sky’s sudden disappearance, but she found herself collapsed onto her bed and deep in though about what he could have been going through… or possibly what he already went through… she just didn’t know at that moment in time.
That day would have been exactly two months since her birthday… exactly two months since he proposed to her… to which she had obviously agreed to marry him. Coincidently, it was also one month since Sky had set off on his dangerous, life threatening mission… had it claimed his life, or hopefully not.
There was then a sudden knock at her bedroom door. This startled the Pink Ranger, and she jumped up slightly in shock. Every knock… every voice… every comforting hug… she wanted it to be him so much... but from past experiences, she had already learnt that there was not much chance that it ever would be again.
Syd then shot up off her bed and answered the door, to find a concerned looking Z on her doorstep. “This is yo---”
“I know, it’s my room too,” Z interrupted. “But I only came up here to see if you were feeling okay. I also have some news… but please, don’t get your hopes up too high. It’s a minimum chance that it is his spacecraft,” she told her.
Before Z could say anything else, she had already rushed down to the command room where Bridge and Cruger were currently waiting for any potential news on the discovered spacecraft… and hopefully it would have been containing the dangerously adventurous Red Ranger.
“Is it him?” Syd asked the pair of them, almost immediately after entering the room. Although she could tell by the look on their faces that they hadn’t heard anything of it just yet… either that or it was the much dreaded bad news.
Bridge shook his head almost immediately after she entered the room and first asked her question. “But no news is good news,” he reassured her.
“Right,” Z adamantly agreed with the Blue Ranger’s previous comment.
They seemed to be waiting for what seemed like a rather long and distressing lifetime. Some more impatient and worried for the wrong result in the end, than the others. Some, however, more confident that it would be who they wanted it to be, and others that had lost all hope of his eventual return.
After what seemed like forever, the doors to the command room slowly opened… to the Rangers divided delight and concern in each other. A tall, dark man appeared at the door. His face expression lead to no current decisions made on his soon to come news, as he was still too oblivious to realise what… or who they wanted it to be in the spaceship.
“We have identified the body,” the man announced.
Syd’s hand suddenly slapped her mouth in complete shock and remaining heartbreak. “The body?!” She exclaimed.
“Oh-no! Not like that. He’s alive,” he then reassured her almost immediately, before she began breaking down before first hearing him out. “His ID card states that he is one… Schuyler Tate… twenty-one years old---”
“That’s Sk---”
But before an exited Bridge could finish his current obvious announcement, Syd had rushed up to the unknown man, and asked him quickly and impatiently, “whereishe?!”
The man tilted his head slightly in complete confusion, to what she had just asked him. “If you’re asking me where he is… he’s about to be brought into the academy’s hospital.”
“Sky!” Syd gasped. He was alive all of that time they were apart.
On the topic of the time we spent together,
I can't say I never wonder,
If you ever think about those days.
“Sky!” Syd shouted extremely loudly and excitedly. “Sky, you’re alive!”
Sky turned around in his hospital bed. “A few cuts, and scratches, and bruises, and broken bones… but I’ll be fine soon,” he told her. He then smiled uncontrollably as she became even closer to his hospital bed.
“I just can’t believe your back,” she cried. She wanted to hug the Red Ranger so much, but she didn’t dare to just now, because of his current hospitalized condition.
“It seemed really bad at times,” Sky explained to her. “But I love you too much to ever leave you on your own.” He then returned her tearful, yet extremely happy, smile.
“Funny, that’s quite like what Bridge and Z told me while you were gone,” Syd ecstatically stated.
“Well they’re so right,” he replied, and then added, “you know me, Syd. I have to finish what I started. I proposed to you, and we cannot possibly just leave it there, can we?”
“I suppose not,” she unsurely replied.
“So about that wedding we planned to have…” Sky began. “How about as soon as I’m out of here… we get back to planning yo--- our perfect day?” He asked her, while thinking he could guess her immediate reply to his last question.
“Sky. I want you to marry me, I want you to marry me tomorrow,” Syd announced impulsively. “I don’t mind where… and I don’t mind how… but anything’s possible, right?” she asked him knowingly… anything was possible, he proved that by returning to her after all of that time apart.
“But Syd, the---”
“I don’t care about the big fancy wedding anymore, I would marry you here… in the academy‘s hospital if I have to,” she replied adamantly. “The day will always be perfect to me, as long as we are both there… together.”
Sky nodded. “I love you, Sydney Drew.”
“And I can’t wait to be your wife, Sky. I love you so much.”
If I could have you back,
If I could have you back…
