Sydney bolted straight up in bed out of a deep sleep, heart racing, and eyes wide. She looked around trying to get her bearings, wondering what had woken her. A moment later she had her answer, as the room was suddenly lit for a brief second, and then shook with the rumble of thunder a second after that. She couldn’t hold back the whimper that escaped her lips at the sound. For as long as she could remember she had been afraid of thunderstorms, and even now they had the power to affect her greatly.
She was unable to stop the sudden and overwhelming fear she felt, even though logically she knew she was perfectly safe. She sat there, arms crossed, trying to quell the shaking of her body, but having no luck in doing so. She felt tears forming in her eyes as more thunder rumbled across the night sky, and she was helpless to stop them. The tears were partly from her fear, and partly from her frustration from her inability to stop the fear. She was a Power Ranger for crying out loud! She had battled some of the most evil criminals in the galaxy, with no hesitation, and yet she couldn’t shake this silly little fear. Why was she still so scared by a simple storm?
One more thunderous crash had her trying to stifle a sob behind her hand, yet failing to do so. With her first sob, she felt the bed beside her move slightly, and then felt strong arms reaching out and pulling her back down. Syd closed her eyes and burrowed deeper into the warm embrace. She felt a kiss placed on her forehead, and a hand rubbing soothing circles on her back, and felt herself start to relax. Soon, the shaking had abated, and her heartbeat had started to return to normal.
She placed a kiss on the chest she was snuggled against, and felt a small squeeze as her answer to the gesture. Syd felt herself drifting back off to sleep, even though the storm outside still raged. She was safe in her husbands arms, and nothing had ever felt so good.

Summary: A different POV, from Syd’s husband.

Sky was awoken from a peaceful sleep when he felt Syd suddenly sit up in bed. He lay there a moment, waiting for her to lay back down, and wondering why she had awoken so quickly. He had his answer a moment later when he felt her jerk at the clap of thunder that shattered the night’s silence.
After two years of being with Syd, he knew about her fear of storms. He gave her a moment to try and calm herself down, knowing that she hated her fear, and letting anyone, himself included, see it. He could feel her small body shaking next to him, and hated that he couldn’t help her.
He opened his eyes and watched her for a moment, in silence. He could see she was trying to calm herself, but with the next thunderous crash her hand flew to her mouth in an attempt to stifle the sob she didn’t want him to hear. It didn’t work, and hearing his beloved’s sob made him move. Reaching out he pulled her back down into his arms. He held her tenderly, stroking her back, and placing kisses on her head every so often. Slowly he felt her cries lessen, her trembling stop, and her heartbeat slow to normal.
He smiled when he felt her place a kiss on his chest, and knew that she was alright now. He gave her a small squeeze to let her know he knew what she was trying to say without words.
They lay there together, and though the storm still raged outside, fell back asleep, safely wrapped in each others arms.
